in glaciers, on lakes and rivers, in plants and animals, on moons, oceans, skating rinks, etc.
Scientifically based and meant for the general reader.

Zero Three Bravo: Solo Across America in a Small Plane, Knopf, 1993 -- A book about aviation
and based on experiences had while flying around the United States in a 50-year old tailwheel airplane,
landing only at small airports. Considered by many to be an aviation classic.

MEDICAL REPORTER.
Sole reporter assigned exclusively to medicine for most of period,
a subject the editors considered complex and important enough to warrant specialization
(uncommon at the magazine).
Major stories included: AIDS, genetic engineering, medical ethics,
Alzheimer's disease, organ transplantation, depression, heart disease, diabetes osteoporosis,
the uses of fetal tissue, and cancer chemotherapy.

For two years was a correspondent in Newsweeks New York Bureau.
Covered issues ranging from the problems of the homeless
to the crises in the city's public schools.

FREELANCE WRITER.
While at Newsweek, wrote articles for outside publications such as Smithsonian,
International Wildlife, and Open Space,
mostly on scientific subjects including depletion of the ozone layer,
decline in bat populations, endangered plants, African park wardens,
and threats to island ecosystems.
